Die Mitglieder verschiedener Parteien sind ausnahmsweise fast einig. Wie die ABC News/IPSOS Umfrage zeigte: „Unter den Republikanern, Demokraten und Unabhängigen glauben überwältigende Mehrheiten – 87%, 86% bzw. 86% –, dass die US-Truppen nicht abziehen sollten, bis alle Amerikaner Afghanistan verlassen haben. Die Partisanenlücke ist auch vernachlässigbar, wenn es darum geht, Truppen in Afghanistan zu halten, bis alle Afghanen, die den Vereinigten Staaten geholfen haben, evakuiert sind.

Das weckt bei mir unangenehme Erinnerungen an den Fall von Saigon. Ich war ein junger Leutnant, der bei der 7. US-Flotte diente, als es geschah. Eines der Schiffe unseres Geschwaders begleitete die erste Welle von Bootsleuten, als sie mit allem, was schwimmen konnte, vor der vorrückenden nordvietnamesischen Armee flohen. In den nächsten Jahren würden Zehntausende beim gleichen Versuch ertrinken.

Obwohl es kaum Berichte gibt, befürchte ich, dass dasselbe jetzt in Afghanistan passieren wird. Zehntausende afghanische Verbündete und ihre Familien sind Taliban, Al-Qaida und ISIS ausgeliefert. Sie werden für das neue Regime leicht zu identifizieren sein, weil wir aus unerklärlichen Gründen biometrische Scanner zurückgelassen haben, die es denen, die mit uns gearbeitet haben, unmöglich machen, ihre Identität zu verbergen.

Moreover, the country will have bloody borders for years as ordinary Afghanis try to escape the Islamic “paradise” that the Taliban have promised to institute and are punished for trying to vote with their feet for freedom.

But right now I am far more worried about the Americans we are leaving behind. As bad as things are now, I am afraid that they are only going to get worse — much worse — in the days to come. We are leaving hundreds of American citizens behind as potential hostages to a hostile regime.

Over the past few weeks, Biden repeatedly promised to evacuate all Americans who wanted to go, along with all Afghans who helped us over the past two decades, if anyone cares to remember.

It’s no consolation, of course, but Sleepy Joe doesn’t either.
